It all began in 1991 with an idea by the regional council of Karlsruhe and several businessmen from the Baden region: the plan was to develop a regional airport – covering an area of approx. 700 hectares – next to the city of Baden-Baden once the Canadian air base Söllingen closed down in 1994. This airport is now operated under the name of Baden-Airpark.

The successful transformation from military use to civil aviation was realised on May 17th,1997: the first charter flight departed from Baden-Airport to Palma de Mallorca and the airport was developed further by a private operating company until 2001.

On January 1st, 2001, Baden-Airpark GmbH was founded by a major shareholder, the Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH (Stuttgart Airport), and Baden Airport became Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport (FKB).

Since then, Baden-Airpark GmbH has been operating a central aviation infrastructure facility at the Upper Rhine region and – together with the trade park – has been providing an important location for the business activities of many companies from various business sectors.

In April 2001, the former airline Hapag-Lloyd operated the first flight from the “new” airport ‘FKB’ – the official three-letter-code according to the international designation of airports.

In the following years, numerous other airlines launched flights from the regional airport of Baden (e. g. Condor, Corendon Airlines, Enter Air on behalf of TUI, Eurowings, Freebird Airlines, Ryanair and Wizz Air), thereby expanding the destination network and choice for passengers.

A milestone in the history of FKB occurred in 2008: for the first time, more than 1 million passengers where handled within one year. A new passenger record was set in 2023 with 1743808 passengers handled.

The favourable location of FKB is not only a bonus for holidaymakers from Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Alsace, who depart from here to the numerous available city and holiday destinations. More and more businessmen are also using FKB as an ideal starting point and benefitting from the time-savings and low cost flights e. g. to London or other major European cities.

An increasing amount of passenger are appreciating FKB as a “regional airport of short distances” which provides quick and uncomplicated procedures.

FKB wants to provide its passengers with the best possible service. For this reason, FKB is continuously investing in the improvement of its infrastructure. The construction of the new hotel (2009) was followed by the expansion of the aircraft parking positions (2010) and the upgrade of the runway (2009) as well as the expansion of the terminal capacity. The technical innovations, in particular, have optimised the quality of service and the security for passengers and crews. In September 2009, the airport was equipped with navigation lights of category CAT IIIb, thereby enabling landings in even the worst weather conditions by providing a horizontal view of at least 75 meters – a definite advantage, considering the foggy weather conditions in the Rhine Valley region.

We are aiming to create a successful balance between economics, ecology and social responsibility. Being a service company, we are reliant on a constructive and positive dialogue with the people of the region. No only our customers are from the region, our qualified and committed staff, whom we offer a long-term and attractive workplace, is living here too. The Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport (FKB) is the impulse generator for the employment and economical development at Baden-Airpark and the entire region.
