PAMINA Rhine meadows family-friendly route
This cycle route winds through the former flood plains of the Rhine river, stretching a total of over 80 miles on both sides of the French-German border between Rheinmünster-Greffern / Drusenheim (France) and Leimersheim / Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, and forming part of the Franco-German ‘PAMINA Rheinpark’ local recreation project. The French side is covered by tarmac path over its entire length, while a gravel track atop a dyke – part of the Rhine flood-defence system – makes up the majority of the German section. Far away from major traffic routes and only occasionally passing through developed areas, the ‘PAMINA Rheinauen’ cycle route provides almost unlimited opportunities to enjoy and take in the natural surroundings. And with it being almost completely flat throughout it’s ideal for family outings, too.
Along the way there are many places to stop at and while away one’s time – such as quiet branches of the original Rhine river before it was straightened, flooded gravel pits, and information points along the route. In addition, there are numerous natural heritage museums providing fascinating insights into life in the river wetlands in the past as well as the rich variety of animal and plant life.
