Rastatt Baroque Residence
Rastatt was the first Baroque residence on German soil to be modelled on Versailles. The largely preserved monumental palace complex is a unique, authentic example of an early 18th century residence. Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden-Baden, the ‘Türkenlouis’, had the former hunting lodge extended into a mighty residence from 1700 and had a town with model houses laid out according to plan. In addition to the main residence, there are two other outstanding and important museums: the Museum of Military History and the Memorial to the Freedom Movements in German History.
